The state’s lead agency issued the draft environmental permits after deeming the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) complete and ready for public review.

    United Water plant will boost tax base

    Taxpayers in the Northern Rockland School District are still reeling from the devastating impact of Mirant Corp.'s decision to close the Lovett plant in Stony Point, which slashed the district's tax revenues by some $11 million and forced the elimination of 120 jobs. Now Mirant wants a 94 percent reduction in taxes it pays on the Bowline power plant in Haverstraw, a move that could cut its school taxes to about $780,000 from $12.8 million, while slashing town revenues to about $180,000 from $3 million.

A population that has grown 15 percent since 1980 to about 300,000 people now tests the limits of our current supply and potentially threatens the health and safety of our residents. If Rockland does not have an adequate supply of water, system pressure that is necessary to maintain quality drinking water and help suppress fires when they occur could be severely compromised.

    Haverstraw water project best choice for Rockland's future

    As early as the 1960s, the predecessor to United Water New York identified the need for a new source of drinking water to meet the projected population growth anticipated in Rockland County. These earlier studies considered the development of a 2-billion-gallon reservoir in the Town of Stony Point, known as the Ambrey Pond. As conditions changed, the project was put on hold, with the possibility we would return to it at some later date.
